The Island School and Cape Eleuthera Institute, a high school semester school and marine research center, respectively, share a campus on Eleuthera Island in The Bahamas. School programming is organized around a central question: how do we live well in a place?

The organization hired WSD to design a campus master plan including landscape, facilities, and systems that provided for the needs of the remote campus and could become part of the curriculum itself — the pedagogy of the school was nested in the land.

The campus master plan was comprehensive in scope and encompassed design for many projects ranging from:

  • farm and food production via orchards, gardens, aquaculture, etc

  • energy production via biodiesel, wind, and solar

  • coastal stability projects including mangrove and coral restoration

  • water filtration and storage

  • gray and blackwater management

  • building design including passive ventilation strategies for harsh subtropical island climate
