Selected black walnut (Juglans nigra) seedling trees 24" to about 30” these are two and three year-old plants and our second generation of the trees we've grown from Elmore Roots Nursery which we purchased about 20 years ago, now 35-40 feet tall and have been raining down nuts every year for the last 8 years. They can produce in only 5-7 years in better conditions though. These parent trees have produced fantastic nuts with a high ratio of nutmeat to shell, extractable and large - traits which Ashworth selected for - the reasons Elmore grew these to begin with. I can attest that of all the many black walnuts i've cracked out in Vermont, none have been as worthwhile as these. While some are large nuts compared to these, as large or even larger, the nut meat size proves tiny compared to the shell. That renders harvesting and processing into food not very worth the time. These are worth processing. Incredibly floral, non bitter, amazing flavor - unlike any walnut you've had from the store. These are selected children of the parent trees which we overwinter, grow out for a season in root pruning containers, then root cellar bare root for the winter, then plant, or sell (or give to some folks). These plants are from nuts harvested two falls ago then gone through the process above, which the nuts currently in the cellar now will go through this summer and next winter.
